| Summary | The concept of 'planetary health', defined as the health of human civilisation and the state of the natural systems on which it depends, is an exciting emerging field of research and study. Through case studies, you will explore interconnected legal and governance challenges that have profound environmental, health and equalities impacts. You will develop skills and insights in planetary health systems thinking, and explore the opportunities and the challenges for governance frameworks at national, regional and international levels.
The course will have broad appeal to both humanities and science graduates interested in developing an understanding of law and policy relevant to key environmental and health challenges. |
| Course description |
In this course you will gain knowledge of key planetary health concepts and of governance institutions, processes and theories of change. Case studies on governance of water, land, and food will engage you with developments in global and local governance of natural resources.
Through the two-day intensive and pre- and post-intensive activity, you will be invited to research, assess, and debate case-studies and simulate evidence-based decision-making processes. You will be introduced to the key governance and decision-making frameworks relevant to this area.
Edinburgh Futures Institute (EFI) - Online Fusion Course Delivery Information:
The Edinburgh Futures Institute will teach this course in a way that enables online and on-campus students to study together. This approach (our 'fusion' teaching model) offers students flexible and inclusive ways to study, and the ability to choose whether to be on-campus or online at the level of the individual course. It also opens up ways for diverse groups of students to study together regardless of geographical location. To enable this, the course will use technologies to record and live-stream student and staff participation during their teaching and learning activities. Students should note that their interactions may be recorded and live-streamed. There will, however, be options to control whether or not your video and audio are enabled.
As part of your course, you will need access to a personal computing device. Unless otherwise stated activities will be web browser based and as a minimum we recommend a device with a physical keyboard and screen that can access the internet.

The course will be assessed by means of the following assessment components:
1) 2500 Word Individual Essay (100%)
The aim of this exercise is to demonstrate understanding of key concepts and theories of Planetary Health Governance. The essay will be linked to the role-play from Intensive Day 2.
This assessment will be due 2 weeks after the intensive. |
