| Course description |
This course provides an interdisciplinary, historically wide-ranging, and thematically diverse introduction to the field of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies. The course is focused on a close and critical evaluation of primary and secondary sources on a range of relevant subjects related to Islamic and Middle Eastern history, culture, society, and politics. Particular emphasis is placed on methodological approaches as to help students develop a solid basis for more specialised postgraduate study. Being team-taught, the course draws on the range of disciplinary and area expertise we have in the department.
Student learning experience
Students are expected to engage with their learning through:
* Introductions by the lecturer.
* Independent reading and reflection through the preparation of weekly readings and seminar questions.
* Engagement with and use of the course material in discussions and other learning activities.
* Independent work for the preparation of the written assignments.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Analyse and explain key issues in the history, politics and culture of the Middle East and the Islamic World.
- Critically evaluate primary and secondary sources on these issues.
- Identify and assess past and current conventional wisdoms in the field of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, including key problems of current research interests across its sub-disciplines.
- Explain the advantages and shortcomings of different methodological approaches on offer across the field.
