| Summary | An introductory course on audible acoustic waves in air, and of the vibration of simple systems including strings, bars and membranes, as well as acoustic tubes.
 |

| Course description |

The course consists of two parts: a lectured technical/mathematical component (weeks 1-8), and a hands-on practical component (weeks 9-12). In the first part of the course there are eight lectures and eight tutorials that cover a range of topics related to vibration and sound. In the second part of the course, during the final few weeks of teaching, you will undertake work on a short project, involving the analysis of room impulse responses.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:

        - 1.	Demonstrate familiarity with the wave equation for string vibration and traveling wave decompositions.
 - 2.	Demonstrate familiarity with the equation of motion of a vibrating bar and with the equation of motion of a vibrating membrane.
 - 3.	Derive expressions for modal shapes and frequencies for simple systems and calculate expressions for phase and group velocity for a given system.
 - 4.	Demonstrate familiarity with the three-dimensional linear acoustic wave equation, including the assumptions and approximations made in its derivation.
 - 5.	Evidence an understanding of the basic principles of room acoustics, including the analysis of impulse response measurements.
