| Summary | The course aims to ensure that the student is able to assess, understand and manage surgical emergencies and children with traumatic injuries. It also aims to ensure that the student understands the principles and practice of anaesthesia and ventilation. |
| Course description |
As with previous courses on the Paediatric Emergency Medicine online learning programmes, this course will be delivered by problem-based learning.
The student will be guided through management of surgical and traumatic conditions, rare to common, based on a systemic approach. There will be an emphasis on critical analysis of accepted therapies and investigative approaches. Finally, there will be an introduction to safe sedation and anaesthesia as they may be practised in the emergency department.
Students will develop critical appraisal skills and be encouraged to use these in the weekly discussion board posts.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand the theoretical framework underpinning current practice in paediatric surgery and trauma (knowledge and understanding)
- Analyse the literature to enable developments in knowledge to be implemented in the clinical setting (apply knowledge)
- Understand the pathophysiological basis of surgical pathology and injury, and apply the therapies available to help manage surgical conditions and trauma (making judgement)
- Present cogent arguments for a chosen line of treatment based on analysis of the available evidence (communication skills)
- Identify learning needs and how to address these, to facilitate their own personal professional development (learning skills)
