| Summary | This course explores biological processes in the use of animals in local, national and global agri-food systems. It will also explore how factors such as disease, nutrition, and breeding can affect biological processes, animal behaviour, performance and welfare. |
| Course description |
This course will develop a knowledge and comprehension of animal science and production in monogastrics (e.g. pigs, poultry and fish), and ruminants (e.g. cattle, goats and sheep). The main themes covered will include:
Production systems
Genetics
Reproduction
Nutrition
Health and disease
Behaviour, performance and welfare
This course will be delivered by a series of lectures, tutorials, laboratory classes and practicals. A range of visits will be utilised to demonstrate different production systems, and how they may influence animal health and productivity.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of key biological processes (genetics, reproduction, nutrition, health, behaviour) relevant to animal production systems worldwide.
- Evidence how these key biological processes are integrated, applied and managed in animal production systems.
- Communicate understanding of the biological processes involved in animal production.
- Undertake a synthesis of concepts, information and issues within animal production.
- Demonstrate an understanding of Animal Agri-food systems.
