SummaryWhat roles did literature play in premodern Chinese society? What are the keys to analysing Chinese poetry and narratives? This course offers an in-depth exploration of the significant genres and literary works from medieval to late imperial China. Students will be guided in translating, interpreting, and analysing classical Chinese poetry and short stories. Through this course, students will acquire a deeper understanding of how the cultural, biographical, and historical contexts shaped these works.
Course description The course explores a wide range of themes, extending beyond traditional topics and recognised masterpieces by notable authors to also embrace works that have been historically marginalised. This includes the writings of women, expressions from non-human perspectives, intersections of literature with material culture, and more. Designed as an interactive seminar, the course invites active engagement from students, who are expected to read both primary and secondary materials and contribute to discussions in every session.
