The aim of this course is to develop academic Japanese skills including (1) reading skills such as speed reading (skimming and scanning), intensive reading and critical reading, (2) academic and formal Japanese writing skills, and (3) research and oral/written presentation skills in Japanese.
Students will learn and practice reading Japanese authentic materials accurately and critically, summarising a passage, writing argumentative essays on academic topics as well as advanced Japanese grammar and vocabulary through understanding and exploring various social issues related to Japan

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Read Japanese authentic materials such as newspaper articles etc. accurately and critically.
- Write a well-structured essay on Japanese social issues by developing arguments critically and logically using a wide range of sentence patterns and vocabulary with full flexibility and accuracy.
- Engage in informed discussion about key issues in Japanese social practices, culture, and language using advanced knowledge of Japanese grammar, syntax and vocabulary.
- Demonstrate interpersonal, interpretive, and intercultural communication skills to enhance their understanding of a subject or context even though it is abstract, complex and unfamiliar, supported by awareness of different cultures, and communicate effectively with others all over the world.
- Demonstrate autonomy and leadership in their activities, carry out self-regulated learning and research under the supervision of the tutor.
