Summary | This course enables you to critically analyse the uses of animals for food and fibre production. You will examine the ethical, cultural and economic aspects and trade-offs involved with farming animals. You will gain a critical understanding of different farming systems around the world, and how animals are moved, marketed and slaughtered. You will evaluate legislation as applied to farmed animals and how this relates to policies of governmental bodies, NGOs and globally important retailers. |
Course description |
This course enables you to critically analyse the uses of animals for food and fibre production. You will examine the ethical, cultural and economic aspects and trade-offs involved with farming animals. Online in-course assessments will incorporate a variety of activities constituting 100% of the overall course mark. These in-course assessments provide the opportunity to give students feedback on their performance during the course, and will include:
Individual written assessment (50%) [LO1 and 2]
Poster presentations (50%) [LO 1, 2 and 3]

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the specialised concepts, principles and legislative frameworks applied to welfare issues of production animals in international contexts.
