Summary | This course is divided into two main themes: Professional skills and clinical skills.
Professional skills:
This module develops the theme of personal and interpersonal skills and communication skills, with an emphasis on inter-personal skills,
Linkages will be made with other courses where aspects of professionalism are highlighted
Clinical skills:
The module will introduce students to basic clinical skills and the concept of assessing a clinical case using the SOAP (subjective, objective, assessment, plan) approach. 2nd Year classes will focus mainly on developing observation, palpation and auscultation skills relevant to equine and bovine veterinary medicine. |

1. Attendance - in accordance with the BVM&S Attendance policy, attendance is expected at 100% of practical and tutorial classes for all courses. If you are unwell and cannot attend you should inform the Year Administrator and arrange to catch up on missed classes as per the above policy
2. Successful Completion of Drug Calculations on Learn with 100% correct answers (multiple attempts are allowed). To be completed on Learn between November and January
3. Reflective essay submission via Learn in January (forms part of portfolio)
4. Formative practical OSCE assessment in April
5. Portfolio Submission - A complete portfolio must be submitted by May.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify and demonstrate the personal attributes and behaviours required to be a successful veterinary professional, with awareness of the importance of e-professionalism, communication, group work, effective time management, financial awareness and maintaining health and wellbeing
- Recognise the importance of the human to animal bond and, effectively demonstrate, good communication skills in a veterinary capacity to promote maintenance of a positive vet/client bond
- Demonstrate how to perform a routine health check consultation on a horse and cow, integrating theoretical knowledge of behaviour, husbandry and nutrition, with the communications skills required to 'take a history' alongside practical skills to facilitate a clinical examination
- Confidently demonstrate a range of Year 2 appropriate common clinical techniques, including drug dose calculations and administration, bandaging, suturing, diagnostic sample collection/preparation and venepuncture on veterinary simulators and mannequins in the clinical skills lab environment
- Reflect on progress in Year 2 academically, practically and personally, with specific considerations given to communication skills, to identify strengths and weaknesses, and be able to communicate these effectively in a variety of formats (e.g. in an essay and as part of a portfolio)
