Summary | A lecture course providing instruction in advanced aspects of modern inorganic chemistry reflecting the research interests in the School. The course comprises individual lecture courses covering the chemistry of elements from all parts of the periodic table, under themes of main group chemistry, synthetic inorganic chemistry, advanced organometallic chemistry/catalysis, and inorganic materials. Emphasis is placed upon applications of inorganic compounds in areas as diverse as catalysis, advanced materials, biology and medicine. |
Course description |
The course comprises five lecture course units, each associated with a small group tutorial.
The final examination consists of five questions, one from each of the course units. Students must answer four questions from these five questions.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand, assess and exploit how various classes of inorganic compounds important to modern inorganic chemistry can be prepared and characterised from choice of reactants and experimental conditions through to product characterization, explaining the principles involved and exemplify the specialist techniques used.
- Demonstrate advanced understanding of the physical principles underpinning inorganic chemistry, including synthesis, reactivity, properties, structure and bonding. To understand and apply methodologies for data analyses in problem solving.
- Assess critically a recent journal article in inorganic chemistry and describe how key chemical concepts have been used to undertake the research reported.
