Summary | This course will build on previous fire science and fire dynamics material and will explore the fundamental ideas behind fire science in the greatest depth covered in Edinburgh's taught curriculum.
This course covers advanced concepts in fire science drawing on combustion science and other allied disciplines. The course covers advanced issues relevant to the study of fire science in research and applied settings. The topics covered include thermochemistry, diffusion and premixed flames and their structures, canonical studies on the burning of condensed phase fuels, flame spread and the practical application of these topics. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify the heat transfer and combustion chemistry processes associated with ignition, flame spread and burning;
- Formulate solutions to problems of ignition, flame spread and burning using relevant heat transfer and combustion chemistry;
- Apply and appraise calculation methods, with appropriate levels of simplification, for problems related to ignition, flame spread and burning;
- Critically evaluate the breadth of current research topics in fire science & engineering and limitations in current knowledge.
