Summary | This course will introduce students to a range of theories of children's psychological development (social, emotional, cognitive). |
Course description |
Through providing an overview of different theories of child development including biological, individual and systemic models, students will be encouraged to critically appraise these theoretical approaches and to consider what predicts typical and atypical development. In addition, the course will invite students to apply developmental theory to real life examples, thus encouraging critical reflection on the utility of developmental theories to enhance current practice/experience.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Consolidate and extend understanding of the different theories of human development.
- Critically reflect on the potential value and challenge of multiple perspectives in developmental theory.
- Conceptualise, analyse and critically appraise the limits and strengths of any particular theory or model.
- Critique and evaluate the principles of developmental theory as they apply to clinical practice.
