Summary | This course will consider key approaches and concepts in psychology and focus on the relevance of psychology for everyday issues and mental health. |
Course description |
The course will be taught in person with five lectures and five tutorials in total. The tutorials will elaborate on the topics presented in the lectures. The course will run in the first teaching block of Semester 1.
Each lecture will cover a core topic in Psychology. Each tutorial will involve students engaging with readings and resources before the class and working in groups within the class. There will be a strong focus on collaborative learning and peer support, and the tutors will facilitate and co-ordinate the learning activities rather than direct them. It is expected that this will encourage self-directed and self-regulated learning among students in addition to good group work skills.
This course is an opportunity for students to reflect upon: key concepts in psychology, the history of psychology, and applications of psychology to understanding mental health. Throughout the tutorials discussion will demonstrate that mental health is influenced by many psychological factors, including: biological factors, cognitive and developmental processes, social contexts and individual differences.
The course is a core component of the MSc Psychology of Mental Health (Conversion) and is not open to students from other programmes.
