Summary | An independent investigation in to a geological problem, collecting and analysing primary observations, and developing professional levels insights and interpretations, and presenting them in a comprehensive report. |
Course description |
28 days of independent geological fieldwork will be undertaken during the summer. Work on data analysis, interpretation, and presentation will continue in Semesters 1 and 2 back in Edinburgh.

The course is assessed entirely on the basis of the dissertation, associated documents and presentation. Details of what is expected from these submissions can be found in the Blue Book part II.
Assessment deadlines
1. The field documentation 40% of total mark, submitted 12:00 on Tuesday of Week 1 of Semester 1 Learn submission
2. The dissertation presentation 20% of the total mark, presented as a talk and poster late in Semester 1 in-person assessment
3. The dissertation report 40% of the total mark, submitted 12:00 on Tuesday of Week 5 of Semester 2 Turnitin submission
Students must attain an overall mark of 40% (or above) to pass the course. |
Feedback |
Students will be advised by academic staff throughout the entire dissertation, including pre-fieldwork guidance and preparation from the CO. Students are assigned an advisor, who will provide guidance ahead of the field work, and feedback to students through the data processing and report writing phases. Formal feedback will be provided on the field notebook and maps, submitted in Week 1 of Semester 1, and after the Presentations in Week 10 of Semester 1. Additional feedback can be obtained from the course organiser where necessary. |
