| Summary | This Geophysics Professional Placement L10 course will be taken together with the Geophysics Professional Placement L11 course in the 4th year of the integrated Masters in Earth Physics programme. |
| Course description |
Students will spend 12 months working on a project related to the degree programme whilst employed by an approved and appropriate research company/institute (in the UK or abroad). Students will spend the majority of their placement engaged in GeoScience research relevant to the degree programme. Students are recruited by companies on a competitive basis and may choose which positions they would like to apply for based on their interests and preferred geographical location. The course provides opportunities to broaden horizons and gain valuable insight into the professional application of their chosen degree programme thus enhancing future career paths. Assessment for this course consists of marks for aspects of the performance on the placement, a written literature review, an oral presentation and e-learning coursework.

Assessment Details
The assessors for each element are indicated by IS for Industrial Supervisor and AS for Academic Supervisor. Where possible, meetings between academic and industrial supervisors will be done online using Microsoft Teams or similar video conference technologies.
A1: LITERATURE REVIEW (Part A: 15% of overall grade; assessed by IS+AS):
Agree literature review topic with Industrial Supervisor at the start of your placement.
This should be completed within 2 months of the placement start date and submitted via Turnitin. Please keep the academic lead and course secretary up to date with this.
3,000 words maximum. Should be fully referenced, references not included in wordcount.
Submit via Turnitin within 2 months of your startdate
A2: PERFORMANCE ON PLACEMENT (Part A: 20% of overall grade; assessed by IS+AS):
IS will submit a short report on your performance on the placement and a grade will be derived in discussion with the AS to ensure common grading across placements.
A3: BLOG (Part A: 15% of overall grade; assessed by AS):
You will write a reflective blog with at least one entry per month and at least 10 entries over the course of your placement.
You should reflect on challenges and successes, both technical and related to working practice. Reflect on how your working practice changes over time and how you can work most effectively. To do well in this assessment, please take the time learn more about reflection using the University's Reflection Toolkit.
This will be confidential to the Academic Supervisor so that it can be open and reflective about all aspects of the placement. It is a place where challenges on the placement can and should be raised.
In the final post, please reflect on what you have learned and how your future outlook has changed in light of the placement.

Assessment Deadlines
Literature Review: 3 months after start date of placement
Reflective Blog: At minimum of 10 entries with at least one per month
Students must attain an overall average of 40% (or above) to pass the course. |

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
