Summary | The aim of this course is to provide students with advanced training in the theory of industrial organisation; as well as to understand the practical implementation of these ideas from a policy perspective in the consideration of firm behaviour within markets. This will provide students with the skills to study industrial organisation further, and to engage in the application of competition policy.
The course will be taught using a combination of academic lectures that explore the theory of industrial organisation, combined with discussion from practitioners based at the CMA concerning the relevant policy for the topic under consideration and its practical implementation within real market settings.
Students will be expected to engage with both the theoretical and policy aspects of the class, and successful completion of the assessment will require mastery of both.
This course will give you training in the theory of industrial organisation, unique insight into how a Competition Authority works, and allow you to assess this practice in light of the economic theory underpinning the ideas. It will act as ideal preparation for a career as an industrial economist, in competition policy, and for a PhD exploring contemporary issues in industrial economics and/or competition policy. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Develop an understanding of basic industrial organisation models that capture the incentives firms face, and their behaviour, in a range of market settings.
- Understand how these models can be used to consider firm behaviour, and the consequences of this behaviour, in particular circumstances related to mergers, collusion, price discrimination, and when faced with ¿behavioural¿ consumers.
- Develop an understanding of how industrial organisation models are used by competition authorities to assess firm behaviour and market outcomes in real markets.
