| Summary | This course builds on the skills acquired in the beginners' level course, developing competence in spoken and written Catalan with a view to improve students plurilingual competence as well as preparing students who wish to study in a university where Catalan is the vehicular language along with Spanish. |
| Course description |
Catalan Language 2 is the follow-up to Catalan Language for Beginners. Students who have successfully completed Catalan Language for Beginners or have an equivalent knowledge to A1+ Catalan from the CEFR will be ideally suited for this course.
At the end of this course, students should reach approximately level A2/1+ on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Catalan Language 2 is taught through the medium of Catalan and follows a flipped classroom approach, which empowers students to be in control of their own learning process. Prior to each contact session, students engage with different materials and complete e-learning activities, so that contact hours can focus on the practical application of Catalan.
Most e-learning activities will aim to develop students¿ intercomprehension skills, which encourages students to reflect and to draw from the knowledge of languages they already know, including their own. In this way, they develop their metalanguage and metacognition whilst they improve their Catalan.
The course uses authentic Catalan sources such as videos on Catalan traditions or places of interest in Catalonia, infographics on famous historical figures, paintings of famous artists, newspaper articles and clips from TV, which allow students to engage with different aspects of Catalan culture and society while learning new vocabulary and being exposed to different aspects of grammar.

Students will be provided regular oral feedback during class time.
During class time students will be given opportunities to provide peer feedback.
For the formative assignment, students will be provided written feedback for their written text and recorded feedback for their oral production.
Students will be required to reflect upon their feedback and write a small entries in their language learning portfolio with action points. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Read and understand different typologies of written and oral texts dealing with familiar, social and cultural matters with emphasis on the Catalan speaking territories.
- Discuss topics in Catalan such as experiences, travel and work, literary routes, art, architecture, language learning and current affairs, and articulate simple opinions and deliver short oral presentations on those.
- Compose short texts on matters of personal relevance, culture and current affairs using the past and present tenses.
- Research cultural communities and societies where Catalan is used and describe sociocultural similarities and differences.
- Use language resources autonomously to become an effective language learner (Catalan dictionaries and corpus, TV and radio programmes, contact with speakers of the language, films in the original language).
