| Summary | From an interdisciplinary perspective, this course offers an introduction to the socio-political situation of the Catalan language in the different geographical areas in which is spoken: Catalonia, the Valencian Country, the so-called Balearic Isles, Andorra, Northern Catalonia (in Southern France) and l'Alguer/Alghero (In Sardinia). We will examine its present status in bilingual and multilingual landscapes as well as its potential future in these areas. |
| Course description |
This course offers an introduction to the theoretical framework of sociolinguistics and an assessment of the social context of the Catalan language.
From a social perspective, the course aims to introduce students to the historical background and the current situation of the Catalan language in the different territories in which it is spoken, relying on existing empirical studies. Students will also learn to apply the methodology deployed in the abovementioned studies. Finally, the different language policies that are applied in the Catalan speaking territories will be scrutinised in depth.
The theoretical classes will concentrate on the explanation, commentary and active debate on sociolinguistic approaches, which will allow students to establish a sound knowledge of the subject and guide them to complete the subsequent activities and exercises. These classes will also provide the bases and strategies for future analysis and research. The practical classes will cover the revision and comment of the exercises, leading to discussions about the socio-political situation of the Catalan language.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Comprehend the fundamental questions that drive research in Catalan sociolinguistics concerning language choice, language attrition, language attitudes, language-in-education policies, linguistic ideology and language planning.
- Appraise a variety of source materials in the core areas of sociolinguistic theory, through the comprehension and analysis of a wide range of communicative contexts and discursive modes within the Catalan-speaking territories.
- Demonstrate communication, presentation and interaction skills across a wide range of media and circumstances, both formal and informal, for lay and specialised audiences.
- Produce assignments which develop arguments both critically and systematically with the use of relevant emphases, subsidiary points, and examples.
