SummaryThe development of supplementary language skills.
Course description This course aims to develop the skills needed to process and interpret intermediate to complex Russia- language texts for an English-speaking audience.
It involves practical and reflective exercises involving the interpretation and analysis of Russian source texts and the creation of English language translations and summaries.
The course will encourage development of a high standard of literacy and linguistic and cultural awareness in Russian and English, an awareness of the importance of communicative and analytical strategies for passive language use, specific awareness of the challenges of Russian-English translation, and a critical attitude to machine translation and other online tools.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand intermediate-complex Russian-language texts relating to various genres and fields of discourse (media, politics, culture, history, etc).
  2. Identify and prioritise relevant information from Russian-language texts for the benefit of an English-speaking audience.
  3. Evaluate, analyse and comment on the rhetorical and stylistic effects of various linguistic devices in Russian-language texts
  4. Translate Russian-language texts into English, demonstrating accuracy, fluency, and an awareness of text type and style.
  5. Demonstrate an awareness of complex and idiomatic vocabulary, syntactical structures, collocation, conventions and intertextuality in relation to Russian-English translation; Demonstrate a practical awareness of a number of translation strategies and devices.
