Summary | This course aims to promote an understanding of the emergence of infectious diseases, the risk factors of disease emergence and the implications for disease surveillance and control in public health. The content will include a review of current legislation aimed at monitoring and controlling these diseases.

Course description |
This is a fascinating area of global health, with the emergence of infectious diseases having impact at a local, national and global scale.
The course will draw upon contemporary and historic examples of emergence, with use of the discussion board to supplement and develop the content in response to current events.
Within the course materials we will review the drivers for disease emergence, and consider the impact of globalisation, increasing human population pressure and habitat encroachment.
We will review the importance of disease detection, identification and monitoring in public health and the gaps in current health systems approaches. This will include content on public perception and political commitment for the surveillance and control of emerging diseases.

Formal summative written assessment will constitute 60% of the student's grade. Online assessment will incorporate a variety of activities will constitute 40% of their overall course grade and is taken to represent a formative assessment of learning throughout the programme. |
Feedback |
Summative assessment consists of a written element, worth 60% of the total mark, and an online element worth 40%. In both cases, comprehensive written feedback is provided individually with 15 working days of the assessment deadline. Students are expected to reflect on their feedback, to seek additional clarification if appropriate, and to use this to improve on future assignments of a similar nature.
Formative assessment consists of discussion around what is expected of each piece of assessed work for the course. This is conducted in an open discussion forum for all students to contribute to and provides an opportunity to clearly understand the key requirements for each assignment before submission.
Any student can post questions about the assignment and a response will be posted on the discussion board by the course tutor within 3 working days. |

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:

- Draw from, and apply knowledge, from a range of discipline specific resources to develop original and creative responses to the challenges of disease emergence.
- Communicate, with peers from a range of audiences, with clarity regarding the critical evaluation of a wide range of health -related data.
