SummaryThis course is aimed as a postgraduate introduction to the Edinburgh Dental Institute (EDI) and the MClinDent/DClinDent Endodontics Programme.

It is designed to offer students training that will allow them to engage with patient workflows within the EDI and raise the standard of their clinical skills.
Course description This course will prepare students for safe and effective clinical management of patients within the EDI. Students must develop an understanding of the NHS and how it will relate to their programme of study. This course is also used to set a minimum practical standard of clinical skills (within a clinical skills laboratory) and dental laboratory skills (within a dental laboratory setting).

Students will attend a series of lectures (including pre-recorded content available on Media Hopper via a Learn VLE), seminars and practical clinical skills sessions focusing on the following areas:

1. Working within the NHS.
2. Introducing students to the endodontic degree and supporting virtual learning environment.
3. Communicating with patients and the dental team.
4. Development of practical skills.
5. Introduce the patient work up for treatment.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Navigate the virtual learning environment and demonstrate they can access the MClinDent/DClinDent Endodontic Programme handbook, timetables, assessment requirements and key readings.
  2. Critically apply their understanding of restorative clinical skills in simulated practical exercises.
  3. Demonstrate an appropriate range of practical skills to accurately transfer simulated clinical scenarios to the dental laboratory.
  4. Troubleshoot practical problems as they arise and utilise critical thinking and analysis to solve them before presenting completed work to supervisors.
  5. Critically evaluate simulated patient information and demonstrate competence in communicating to a dental laboratory technician and referring general dental practitioner using NHS approved mediums.
