SummaryAn integrated course in spoken and written modern Persian. All the common grammatical structures are studied, translation done both from and into Persian, and a basic vocabulary are built up.
Course description This course is designed to introduce students to the Persian language. The course teaches how to read and write the Persian script and introduces the main features of Persian grammar together with a basic vocabulary. It is designed to provide students with the key tools to understand, speak, read and write elementary Persian. The class follows a combination of the exercises including translation exercises.
Auditing/Class Only is not permitted for any languages courses.

Prohibited Combinations Other requirements PLEASE NOTE: This course is designed for complete beginners with no previous knowledge of Persian of any kind. Students considering taking Persian 1a as an elective course who have knowledge of Persian at or beyond CEFR A2 level, or students who are native speakers of Persian, should not enrol in this course, as this would be considered academic misconduct. In such cases the students will be asked to leave the course.

Feedback Feedback is frequently given to students in different forms for their different tasks such as home works, translations, weekly tests, compositions, oral presentations and aural exercises. Both oral and written, individual and group feedback are given for during the semester. Both summative and formative feedbacks are important.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand basic structures of Persian grammar, script and pronunciation.
  2. Identify, describe and manipulate a range of basic linguistic forms and structures in reading, writing, and conversation.
  3. Read elementary texts in Persian (50-70 words) and start basic conversation in elementary Persian.
  4. Write grammatically sound sentences and communicate basic information in writing.
  5. Acquire a basic knowledge of Iranian culture as learning Persian takes place against a context of Persian culture and civilization.
