SummaryThe treatment of disease is increasingly reliant on new engineering concepts and tools which accelerate the development of implanted medical devices. This course will outline the cutting-edge technologies used to treat musculoskeletal and cardiovascular ailments and diseases. It will focus on the design and operation of these technologies allowing the student to build a greater understanding of the medical challenges associated with improving their performance. The course will furthermore highlight the leading-edge in robotic surgical procedures. Finally, the course will explore future developments of additive manufacture for medicine.
Course description The course will consist of 20 1-hour lectures plus 10 1-hour example/lab demonstration classes.

Course Overview
1. Fracture Fixation Technologies.
2. Total Joint Replacement.
a. Gait Cycle Analysis.
b. Total Hip Replacement.
c. Total Knee Replacement.
d. Tissue Engineering Cartilage.
3. Hand and its treatment interventions.
4. Spine and its treatment interventions.
5. Vascular grafts - synthetic and venous.
6. Minimally Invasive Surgery - Keyhole.
7. Robotic, and robot-guided, surgery.
8. Catheters.
9. Heart Values.
10. Stents.
11. Additive Manufacture for Medicine.

They will include demonstration labs of devices and assessment of their manufacturing processes.

Course work:
Small coursework exercise [20%].
The course work will be an exercise looking at methods of manufacturing and design of medical devices.

3 questions on the design of surgical tools and implanted medical device [80%].

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand the principles and techniques of Fracture Fixation Technology and Total Joint Replacement;
  2. Comprehend the useful possibilities of Tissue Engineering in the treatment of osteoarthritis;
  3. Describe the hand and spine and explain their treatment interventions;
  4. Appreciate the treatment of vascular disease and the many different from they can take from minimally-invasive to invasive surgeries. Review the cutting-edge in surgical tools, including robot-assist, catheters and stents;
  5. Appreciate future advances in Additive Manufacture for Medicine.
