Summary | This course provides the student with the opportunity to engage with critical contemporary issues relating to leading and managing in health and social care contexts. Engaging with a contemporary global context in which staff retention is a key factor, this course considers the central role of leadership in creating the conditions for improved staff experience and increased patient safety. Critically engaging with concepts such as psychological safety, Just organisational cultures, followership, burnout and moral distress alongside leadership theories this course offers the student the opportunity to deepen their understanding of their potential impact as leaders. Using a critical, research-based focus leadership is examined. |
Course description |
This course provides the student with the opportunity to engage with critical contemporary issues relating to leading and managing in health and social care contexts. Engaging with a contemporary global context in which staff retention is a key factor, this course considers the central role of leadership in creating the conditions for improved staff experience and increased patient safety. Critically engaging with concepts such as psychological safety, Just organisational cultures, followership, burnout and moral distress alongside leadership theories this course offers the student the opportunity to deepen their understanding of their potential impact as leaders. Using a critical, research-based focus leadership is examined.
The course will be taught over 10 weeks with contact hours including lectures and workshops on campus. Students are expected to engage with their learning and read materials prior to class and engage in discussion and group work in the workshops. Students will need to engage in some group work outside of class contact hours to prepare for activities in the workshops. Students are expected to evidence and demonstrate achievement of Learning Outcomes through preparing a logical, coherent and research based paper debating topics and issues pertaining to leadership in the health and/or social care context.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Critically evaluate contemporary leadership theories and their applicability across a range of health and social care contexts.
- Analyse the differences between leadership and management and their application in health and social care.
- Critically evaluate the role of leadership in creating the conditions for psychological safety and Just organisational health and social care contexts.
- Critically reflect on the inter-relationship of leadership and culture and its implications for health and social care contexts.
- Evaluate the role of leadership and management in supporting organisational change.
