Summary | The course provides an introduction to the concepts, methods and practical skills of GIS and spatial analysis used for health research. These will be taught through lectures and practical work. Students will develop their knowledge and skills in the analysis of geospatial health data.

Course description |
Geographical aspects of health and healthcare are an important part of public health research and practice. Using GIS in health systems and policy is crucial for uncovering the spatial pattern of disease, analysing causative factors of disease, and informing policy and potential health interventions. Recent years have seen rapid growth in applications of GIS and spatial analysis in health research. This 'spatial turn' is in line with increasing availability of health related geospatial data and demands from public health authorities in health governance.
This module aims to introduce theories, methods, and practical skills of GIS and spatial analysis in health and healthcare. It focuses on the application of GIS and spatial analysis techniques to quantitative epidemiological research questions and public health intelligence work. The role of GIS and spatial analysis will be introduced in the following analytical areas: the mapping of health data; analysis of spatial clustering in health events; measuring and modelling exposure to risk factors, evaluation of health inequalities, ecological analysis of risk factors, interpolation of health-related indicator and spatial access to health care and social care. This course has been designed to mix lectures and practicals together providing hands-on opportunities for students to learn the methods and skills in analysis in addition to understanding of the key concepts of health data analysis

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand characteristics of geospatial health data
- Understand the main theories and methods for disease mapping
- Understand the theories and methods for hotspots of disease clustering
- Understand the spatial data types, issues with spatial analysis and be familiar with a variety of methods of spatial inferential analysis in health research
- Be able to implement the methods using ArcGIS and special software packages
