SummaryThis intermediate course in philosophy of language explores topics in the philosophy of language in greater depth than in Mind, Matter, and Language. The course might cover topics such as: the nature of meaning, the role of semantic theory, speech act theory, the relation between thought and language, the social role of language, and particular linguistic constructions.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Mind, Matter and Language (PHIL08014) AND Knowledge and Reality (PHIL08017)

Prohibited Combinations Other requirements Students studying on MA Cognitive Science (Humanities) are permitted to take this course without having met the pre requisites of Mind Matter and Language and Knowledge and Reality. However, it is advisable that students discuss the suitability of the course with their PT and the course organiser before enrolling.

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should have completed at least 3 Philosophy courses at grade B or above. We will only consider University/College level courses. Applicants should note that, as with other popular courses, meeting the minimum does NOT guarantee admission. **Please note that 3rd year Philosophy courses are high-demand, meaning that they have a very high number of students wishing to enrol in a very limited number of spaces.** These enrolments are managed strictly by the Visiting Student Office, in line with the quotas allocated by the department, and all enquiries to enrol in these courses must be made through the CAHSS Visiting Student Office. It is not appropriate for students to contact the department directly to request additional spaces.

Learning Outcomes
The coursework involves close and critical analysis of various historical and current views on central issues in the philosophy of language. Students are asked to read, critically assess and discuss some of the most important texts in these fields. Students are encouraged to develop their skills in individual research through the writing of essays, and to develop their critical, analytic and communication skills through informal discussion and possibly oral presentation in class.

Graduate Attributes and Skills Students will develop their reading, writing, and reasoning skills. They will do so by studying some of the most important texts that laid the groundwork for the scientific study of language in the twentieth century. They will then summarize and evaluate the central arguments and theories that emerged in this enterprise. The course develops knowledge about the nature of language, linguistic representation, communication, and closely related topics.
