| Summary | The course will examine theories of beauty and the arts (especially, though not limited to, poetry and drama) in ancient thinkers, especially Plato and Aristotle; thinkers from later antiquity may also be included. |
| Course description |
Topics discussed will include the nature of beauty, artistic representation or imitation, censorship and the place of art in education, and the concept of tragedy. The impact of ancient aesthetic theories on later thought may also be considered

Other requirements | Students who have not taken Knowledge and Reality (PHIL08017) and Mind, Matter and Language (PHIL08014) must gain permission from the Course Organiser before enrolling on this course.
Students studying on MA Cognitive Science (Humanities) are permitted to take this course without having met the pre-requisites of Mind, Matter and Language and Knowledge and Reality. However, it is advisable that students discuss the suitability of the course with their PT and the course organiser before enrolling. |

Learning Outcomes
| By the end of the course, students should have acquired ? an understanding of some major issues in ancient aesthetics ? an understanding of how these issues relate to continuing debates ? an ability to read closely, analyse and criticise ancient philosophical texts. They should also have further developed the following skills ? written skills ? the ability to take part in group discussion ? the ability to present and defend arguments ? the ability to understand and analyse arguments
