Summary | This course will examine some particular issue or set of issues in philosophy. The specific content for the year (topic, representative readings) will be advertised during the course selection process. |
Course description |
The specific topic(s) covered will vary from year to year. In 21-22 the topic will be Alienation.
Questions about alienation arise in historical and contemporary discussions in moral philosophy, political philosophy, the ethics of economics, epistemology, aesthetics, and elsewhere. These questions concern the proper form of human relationships, the ways in which agential structures can interfere with these relationships, and how we might overcome such alienating structures. In this class, we will address a range of different accounts of alienation in different domains, focussing, in particular, on drawing some connections between the intellectual traditions descending from Karl Marx and Bernard Williams.
