Course description The health of ecosystems is dependent on their structure and function, and plays a critical role in the health of the human, animal and plant populations they support. This course provides an introduction into ecosystem health within the wider context of One Health. Approaches to defining and assessing ecosystem health are considered and ecosystem function and the role of biodiversity are discussed. The concept of ecosystem services and natural capital are outlined. The science behind resilience is introduced including how it relates to sustainability of social-ecological systems. Current understanding of climate change and its potential impact on human and animal health is introduced. Relevant examples will be used to illustrate common problems and how solutions may be applied.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the evolving principles, methodologies, theories and concepts of Ecosystem Health as they relate to One Health concerns.
  2. Apply knowledge competencies at the forefront of Ecosystem Health, including synthesis and critical evaluation of contextually relevant materials.
  3. Demonstrate awareness of sustainability and equity principles whilst communicating with audiences of differing levels of knowledge and understanding of Ecosystem Health.
