SummaryThis course is designed to provide a general introduction to policy in a One Health context. The role that policy has played in the evolution of One Health will be discussed, with particular reference to examples of emerging infectious zoonotic diseases.
Course description Current policy frameworks of relevance will be outlined and important terminology introduced. Approaches to the integration of human and animal health disease control will be considered, including approaches to disease surveillance. The course will introduce common policy research methods and illustrate how policy research may contribute to policy change. Methods for communication, including policy briefs and position papers, will be discussed.
A variety of learning methods will be used, including narrated PowerPoint lectures, written notes, online discussion boards and group work.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand how health policy is made and communicated, and how it can be changed.
  2. Understand the evolution of the One Health movement from a policy perspective and the influential emerging disease events.
  3. Understand the political and institutional challenges in implementing One Health.
  4. Identify and define the areas of policy that constrain or enable effective intersectoral collaboration, and present examples of successful policy measures at national, regional and global levels.
