Summary | This course will provide the diagnostic imaging approach to the canine and feline abdomen, focusing on the major organ systems: hepatobiliary, gastrointestinal, urogenital, lymphatics as well as the peritoneal, retroperitoneal cavity, perineum and pelvic canal; with emphasis on radiography and ultrasonography. The interpretation principles, normal anatomy, and variants, as well as important imaging features of abdominal disease will be covered. |
Course description |
This five-week course will cover the diagnostic imaging interpretation principles, normal anatomy and variants, as well as important imaging features of abdominal disease of the major organ systems.
This may include:
- Basic interpretation of abdominal radiography and ultrasonography, including normal variants and anatomy
- Radiographic and ultrasonographic interpretation of the hepatobiliary, gastrointestinal, urogenital and lymphatic systems.
- Radiographic and ultrasonographic interpretation of the peritoneal and retroperitoneal cavity.
- Radiographic and ultrasonographic features of perineal, pelvic canal, and abdominal wall abnormalities.
- The basic and main applications of advanced imaging of the abdomen focusing on important imaging features of pertinent abdominal pathologies

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to recognise normal radiographic features of the canine and feline abdomen.
- Demonstrate the ability to recognise the general abnormalities that most commonly affect small animals, involving the hepatobiliary, gastrointestinal, urogenital, lymphatic systems as well as peritoneal and retroperitoneal space.
- Apply basic interpretation principles to interpret and recognise acute abdominal emergency cases.
- Apply basic principles and applications of advanced abdominal imaging (Computed Tomography) and other modalities.
