Summary | This course will address the skills required in editing and reviewing of surgical manuscripts. It will enable the student to communicate and work effectively in online groups with people from different cultural contexts to develop a deep understanding of critical appraisal and editing skills. Students will work both in groups and individually, supported by experienced tutors from the University of Edinburgh and the editorial team of the British Journal of Surgery Society (BJSS). Learning objectives are articulated through group work, self-directed online study, ongoing feedback, course specific resource lists, recorded presentations and participation in online discussion boards. |
Course description |
This is an online course covering 20 credits.
The course will exploit the expertise brought by our collaborators, the British Journal of Surgery Society (BJSS), in supporting students to further develop their understanding of surgical writing, peer review, editing and evidence based practice.
Students will work both individually and in groups, supported by experienced tutors including editors of BJS and BJS Open, to undertake peer review and editing of manuscripts and published articles

The course employs assessment methods and strategies aligned to the University's Assessment and Feedback Principles and Priorities, ensuring quality and consistency in assessment and feedback practice.
Feedback shall be provided on all formative and summative assessed work and shall normally be returned within three weeks of submission.
The purpose of formative assessment feedback is to help students develop assessment and feedback literacy and to come to understand what is expected of them as they progress through the course.
Marking criteria and marking rubrics shall be provided to students along with the assessment task to develop a shared understanding of the marking criteria and expectations. |

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the concepts underpinning critical appraisal, peer review, editing, and publishing a surgical paper
- Apply critical appraisal, peer review and academic writing skills to review and edit a surgical paper
- Critically appraise surgical literature, and its uncertainty and complexity
- Critique and edit surgical papers submitted for publication
