In Year 1, students must study 80 credits.
In Year 2, students must study 100 credits.
Across the 2 years of study, students must take the following courses:
a) 20 credits of the programme compulsory core courses:
- Envisioning Sustainable Lands and Cities
- Evaluating Sustainable Lands and Cities
b) 40-50 credits worth of EFI shared core courses:
Year 1:
- Interdisciplinary Futures
- Insights Through Data [AND/OR] Understanding the Climate Crisis
- Ethical Data Futures
- Representing Data [OR] Building Near Futures
Year 2:
- Data / Futures 2 *

c) 50-60 credits of optional courses. These must include:
- A minimum of 20 credits of programme specific optional courses.
- Up to 30-40 credits of EFI portfolio optional courses.
Please note that if you have chosen to study 2 'Shared Core' courses delivered in Semester 1 (Understanding the Climate Crisis AND Insights Through Data), then you must select 50 credits from this course collection.
If you have chosen to study 1 'Shared Core' course delivered in Semester 1 (Understanding the Climate Crisis OR Insights Through Data), then you must select 60 credits from this course collection.
d) 60 credits of the programme compulsory core final project courses:
- Knowledge Integration and Project Planning: Sustainable Lands and Cities
- Futures Project: Sustainable Lands and Cities
The programme compulsory core courses and the shared core courses introduce students to skills and concepts that will assist them when studying optional courses and the project. Therefore, we encourage students to take the three programme compulsory core courses during year one.
Please aim to ensure that your credits are equally balanced across both semesters in a year. This is to ensure student workload is balanced.
