Summary | This course will develop a design topic and associated site, as self-selected by the student, based on their previously gathered research. Students will be required to demonstrate an understanding of the site's structure and servicing through review of drawings and creation of structural models and relevant diagrams/strategies. Through a transparent iterative process, they will formulate a final design solution for their chosen site. They will then focus in detail on a major space within their scheme, developing the area in detail, to a level that demonstrates a professional understanding of materials, to a recognised construction industry level of information. |
Course description |
This course involves students using their brief, site and topic research (as established in course Interior Design 4A) to developing design proposals, resulting in a final scheme proposal.
Students will gain an understanding of information required to successfully present design information at outline scheme design stage to scale. It will comply to the regulations as set out in the Scottish Building Standards for fire escape, stairs and ramps, and toilets. Final scheme should also meet recognized Government regulations for disabled access.
They will then focus in on one area of the scheme and develop and detail it to a much more advanced level, to include construction level drawings to scale. Students will learn about specifying of materials and detailing of interior elements. They will develop their final proposals in drawn and model form.

Other requirements | This course requires additional costs to be met by the Student.
Travel and Accommodation: There are required travel costs associated with course-related field-trips and site visits.
Students will be expected to support the cost of local travel by public transport for required visits.
Equipment and software: Most equipment and software required will be provided by the School, but student will be expected to provide some specialist equipment including a personal laptop capable of running and processing Adobe Suite, & CAD (AutoCAD & Sketch-up). Students will require to purchase an annual licence to run Sketch-up from Year 2 onwards.
Materials: Students will be expected to fund the purchase of general art and design materials, such as sketchbooks, paper and pens. Students will be expected to fund purchase of some specialist materials required by their course (e.g. drawing and modelmaking equipment and materials, such as scale ruler, scalpel, cutting rule, tape and glues, card & paper). There may also be costs for workshop materials. You will find a detailed equipment and materials list published for each course on Learn. Course Organisers will support you in meeting intended learning outcomes while keeping material costs to a minimum, encouraging sustainable, responsible sourcing through Free Use Hub but students will be expected to fund optional material costs as necessary for their own project work.
Printing: Students are expected to fund printing of A4-A2 prints for interim reviews, tutorials & presentations.
To fully participate in this course students are recommended to budget a minimum of £50-60.00 (this does not include purchase of laptop or software). All courses in final year are working towards the graduate show, which will incur additional costs as highlighted in overall programme costs. |
Additional Costs | Basic model making materials (cardboard, glue etc.), general printing for interim submissions, model making material for detail model - approximately £60 max (note this does not include students own printing requirements during design stage). |
