Summary | Architectural Technology Research emulates the role of researcher-practitioner, recognising that architectural projects in the context of a Climate Emergency need a level of technological investigation as a prerequisite to successful low carbon design. Students will work collaboratively to conduct research into architectural environments, materials and processes with a focus on reducing the global impact of the buildings and places we design. |
Course description |
The course runs throughout Semester 1 with students undertaking research projects in contemporary architectural technology and environmental issues in small groups. Students develop and research architectural themes in response to the Climate Emergency, and then explore this in the context of the design studio. Output from research projects will be prepared and presented as a digital resource to be shared with all students on the M.Arch programme. This creates an array of research in materials, environmental design and approaches to designing and constructing the built environment. The course is complimented by guest talks and resources from architects involved in practice based research.
Students are supported by tutors in selection of the research topics and guiding the research through the semester. Tutorial sessions will be arranged for groups to discuss, share and present their work. Final work will be presented in research symposia.

Materials: Students will be expected to fund the purchase of general art and design materials, such as sketchbooks, paper and pens. Students will be expected to fund purchase of some specialist materials required by their specific research projects. Course Organisers will support you in meeting intended learning outcomes while keeping material costs to a minimum, encouraging sustainable, responsible sourcing through Free Use Hub. but students will be expected to fund optional material costs as necessary for their own project work.
Printing: Students are expected to fund occasional printing of drawings, as required for presentations and tutorials.
To fully participate in this course students are recommended to budget a minimum of £ 50 |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Appraise the technological and environmental conditions specific to issues in contemporary architecture (eg. reuse and retrofit, sustainable, circular and regenerative design).
- Organise, assimilate and present technological and environmental information in the broad context of architectural design to peer groups.
- Analyse and synthesise technological and environmental information pertinent to particular context (eg. users, environment).
- Understand the potential impact of technological and environmental decisions of architectural design on a broader context.
