SummaryThe final year of this programme is equivalent to three courses or modules. It is designed to draw together all the teaching and clinical activity from the previous years and allow students to present and demonstrate their accumulated knowledge.
The presentation of a case report represents clinical activity and problem-solving skills.
The systematic literature review represents the skills and attributes in research and critical enquiry and presents students with the opportunity to publish their work and add to knowledge.
The unseen case viva voce allows students to demonstrate problem solving, analytic, critically reflective and clinical communication skills.
Course description This final year course is more self-directed than first- and second-year courses. There are learning resources on systematic review methodology and presentation of a clinical case in LEARN

There is synchronous teaching scheduled in TEAMS meetings on systematic review methodology, library skills and Academic Language and Literacy.

The winter school at the beginning of semester two is a full week (face-to-face or video link attendance are available. The 5 days in the week cover:

Students present and receive feedback and teaching on their long clinical cases based on progress to date.
Students present and receive feedback and teaching on their systematic reviews progress to date
There is a one-day library and information skills workshop presented by the academic librarians
There is a one-day workshop on Academic Language and Literacy (ALL) presented by ALL colleagues.
The final day is a mock-unseen case examination

Feedback There are opportunities for formative feedback on clinical case presentation, systematic review and the unseen case mock examination.

Marks and summative feedback are released to students after submission of all elements of the final examinations at the end of the year.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. To be able to present a review of the current dental literature pertaining to a particular research question.
  2. To be able to select a range of methods of enquiry when researching the dental literature.
  3. To present a portfolio of evidence on completion of this degree programme.
  4. To be able to present a clinical case in a logical sequence.
  5. To have knowledge and critical understanding of the essential theories, principles and concepts of evidence based dentistry and its application in dental primary care.
