Summary | The course is the first of 3 in Year 1 which make up the PG Certificate. When all 3 courses are successfully completed, students will be able to recognise, assess and manage the ill or injured child, based on sound and current evidence. |
Course description |
The course covers emergency care of pathological conditions in the following systems:
Airway and Respiratory
Cardiac and Circulation
Inflammation and Cogaulation
Sepsis & IV Access
The course follows a problem-based approach. Each block (above) will contain clinical Exercises and Discussion Board topics allowing the student to search for evidence regarding best practice; and present the information in a structured manner following standard scientific writing.
An end-of-term Major Assignment allows the student to explore a topic chosen from a list and present this as a PowerPoint presentation.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand the theoretical framework underpinning current practice in paediatric emergency medicine (knowledge and understanding)
- Analyse the literature to enable developments in knowledge to be implemented in the clinical setting (apply knowledge)
- Understand the pathophysiological basis of illness and injury, and apply the therapies available to help restore homeostasis (making judgement)
- Present cogent arguments for a chosen line of treatment based on analysis of the available evidence (communication skills)
- Identify learning needs and how to address these, to facilitate their own personal professional development (learning skills)
