| Summary | Students will develop creative thinking and team skills by facing an open-ended process design challenge including consideration of unsteady state operation and optimisation, such as implementation of carbon capture on a power plant. The problems have a clear link to 'real world' scenarios where safety and environmental considerations are paramount. Students must show they are capable of addressing multiple, and sometimes contradictory, design constraints while providing a comprehensive understanding of the process operation (both steady and unsteady state) and control. |
| Course description | There will be introductory lectures followed by weekly face-to-face tutorials, which will be complemented by process simulation exercises using dedicated software. Students will work in small groups, working independently on tasks pre-agreed with other group members. |

Learning Outcomes
| On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Apply and adapt design processes/methodologies to unfamiliar, open-ended technical challenges;Work with incomplete/uncertain information, quantify the uncertainty in the design, and provide, where possible, mitigating measures;Generate an innovative design to fulfil a process requirement, which may require the optimisation and/or upgrade of key units/areas;Work with incomplete/uncertain information, quantify the uncertainty in the design, and provide, where possible, mitigating measures. |
