Year 1 Academic year: 2025/26, Starting in: September

Notes:
During your studies you will be required you to complete 120 credits of postgraduate courses, usually 60 credits in semester 1 and 60 credits in semester 2. You will then undertake a dissertation research project worth 60 credits.

Before starting your studies you should submit your course selection to the Postgraduate Research Support team (office.pgr@business-school.ed.ac.uk). Please consult with your supervisors regarding all option course choices, as they will be required to approve your selection. The Postgraduate Research Support team will be in touch with all incoming students on how to select and submit their course selection.

MScR in Management students funded by SGSSS must follow the SGSSS programme structure (Group B).

There are no compulsory courses in this year of this programme.

MScR in Management will take three compulsory courses:

Semester 1
- CMSE11494 Introduction to Research in Business (20 credits)
- CMSE11618 Theories and Philosophies in Research on Business and Management (20 credits)

Semester 2
- CMSE11442 Supervised reading: Refining the proposal (20 credits)

Dissertation
- CMSE11003 Dissertation (MSc by Research (Management) Mode C) (60 credits, must pass at 50%)
AND

UEBS PGR Methods Courses

Select between 20 and 40 credits of the following courses
Notes:
You are strongly encouraged to take both of the two research methods courses, but with supervisor approval you can choose to take only one and then select another semester 2 option course.

- CMSE11312 Qualitative Research (20 credits, sem 2)
- CMSE11524 Quantitative Methods for Business Scholars (20 credits, sem 2)
AND

MScR in Management option courses

Select between 0 and 40 credits of the following courses
Notes:
If you are taking one research methods course, you will need to select 20 credits of option courses for semester 1 and 20 credits of option courses for semester 2.

If you are taking both research methods courses, you will need to select 20 credits of option courses for semester 1.

You can choose your option courses from the suggested list of MScR in Management option courses:

- BUST11231 Supervised reading: Literature review (20 credits, sem 1 or sem 2)
- CMSE11443 Supervised reading: Methods 1 (20 credits, sem 1 or sem 2)
- CMSE11620 Supervised Reading: Reflecting on Research (20 credits, sem 1 or sem 2)
- CMSE11636 Researching as a Team: Co-authored Research Project (20 credits, sem 2)

Or you can choose your option courses from the list of level 11 courses from elsewhere in the University.

Please note that we must receive permission from the Course Organiser before we can confirm enrolment on one of these other option courses. Your supervisors will need to confirm this option course is relevant to your area of research.
