Year 1 Academic year: 2025/26, Starting in: September

Notes:
You will take 120 credits in Year 1. 4 courses (80 credits) will be PPLS/Informatics courses and 2 courses (40 credits) are open (free choices). You must pass the 4 PPLS/Informatics courses in order to progress to Year 2 of the programme.

The breakdown of courses is as follows:
- Introduction to Cognitive Science (compulsory, 20 credits) - must pass
- Linguistics and English Language 1A (compulsory, 20 credits) - must pass
- 1 compulsory Philosophy course (20 credits, chosen from Group A) - must pass
- 1-3 courses (20-60 credits) of PPLS/ Informatics courses (chosen from Group B.1) - must pass at least 20 credits from this group.
- 0-40 credits of 'outside' Level 7/8 courses from across the University, including up to 1 'Challenge' course (Group B.2)

You may split your optional credits (Group B) as you wish, provided you take a minimum of 20 credits of PPLS and Informatics courses.

MA CogSci: Year 1 PPLS/Informatics (Group B.1)

Notes:
You must take 20-60 credits (1-3 courses) of PPLS and Informatics courses.

Examples:
- You could take Psychology 1A, Logic 1, and Morality and Value to make up to 60 credits of PPLS/Informatics courses.
- You could take 20 credits in PPLS/Informatics (e.g., History of Philosophy A only) and use your remaining 40 credits for courses outside PPLS/Informatics.

Planning ahead for Psychology dissertations:

- If you are considering a Psychology dissertation that involves ADVANCED statistical methods and following quantitatively demanding honours courses, you are advised to take Data Analysis for Psychology in R1 (DAPR1) in Year 1, followed by DAPR2 and DAPR3 in later years.

- If you are considering a Psychology dissertation that involves BASIC statistical methods and following moderately quantitative honours courses, you should take AT LEAST DAPR1, either in Year 1 or Year 2. Taking DAPR1 in Year 1 followed by DAPR2 in Year 2 is also recommended in this case.

Planning ahead for Year 2 Informatics:

- Students intending to take Informatics courses in Year 2 should take both Informatics 1 - Intro to Computation, and Informatics 1 - Object Oriented Programming in Year 1.

You may optionally take up to 40 credits of 'outside' courses, which can be from subject areas across the University. Some courses have prerequisites that you will need to meet to take the course.

You may only select Level 7 and 8 courses from Schedules A to Q, S, T, W and Y. Only 40 credits of level 7 courses are permitted across Years 1 and 2 combined.

Challenge Courses: Engaging with complex problems through interdisciplinary collaboration

Select between 0 and 20 credits of the following courses
Notes:
Challenge Courses are designed to bring together students from different degree programmes to explore the complex issues facing the world today through interdisciplinary collaboration and creative thinking.

Working with each other and expert academics, students will gain new perspectives and develop important life skills highly valued by employers, such as teamwork, problem-solving and adaptability.

Year 2 Academic year: 2025/26, Starting in: August

Notes:
There are no compulsory courses in Year 2.

You must choose:

- 80-120 credits (4-6 courses) of PPLS courses, including at least one course in each PPLS subject area (Group A.1)
- 0-40 credits (1-2 courses) of Informatics courses (Group A.2)
- 0-40 credits (0-2 courses) of 'outside' Level 7/8 courses from across the University, including up to 1 'challenge' course (Group A.3)

You may divide your optional credits as you wish, as long as you take a minimum of 80 credits of PPLS courses. This ensures a total of 120 credits for the year.

Progression to Year 3 requires:
- a pass, achieved at the first attempt, in 80 credits of Year 2 PPLS courses.

Some Year 3 courses have Year 2 courses are pre-requisites so it is advised to check Year 3 courses when selecting your Year 2 courses.

There are no compulsory courses in this year of this programme.

Notes:
You must take 4-6 courses from this group. Within your selection, you must include at least one course from each of the following subject areas: Philosophy, Psychology, and Language Sciences.

Planning ahead for Psychology dissertations:

- If you are considering a Psychology dissertation that involves advanced statistical methods and quantitatively demanding Honours courses, you are advised to take Data Analysis for Psychology in R 2 (DAPR2) this year. To enrol in DAPR2, you must have taken DAPR1 or an Informatics course involving coding in Year 1.

- If you do not pass DAPR2 at the first attempt, you will not normally be advised to take DAPR3 in Year 3, or to undertake an advanced statistical dissertation in Year 4.

- If you are considering a Psychology dissertation that involves basic statistical methods and more moderately quantitative Honours courses, you should take DAPR1 if you did not take it in Year 1. If you have already taken DAPR1 in Year 1, taking DAPR2 this year is also recommended. Taking DAPR3 in Year 3 is not required for this pathway.

You may take Year 3 courses from Philosophy, Psychology, Language Sciences, and Informatics.

You may divide your course credits as you wish, provided that across Years 3 and 4 combined, you take at least 20 credits of Honours courses in three of the four subject areas: Philosophy, Psychology, Language Sciences, Informatics. It is expected that you will choose courses in the subject areas you studied in Year 2.

Preparing for Dissertations in Year 4:

- If you are planning to undertake a Philosophy dissertation in Year 4, you must take the 0-credit Philosophy Dissertation Information course in Year 3.

- If you are considering a Psychology dissertation involving ADVANCED statistical methods and plan to take quantitatively demanding Honours Psychology courses, you must take Data Analysis for Psychology in R 3 (DAPR3). DAPR3 has DAPR2 as a prerequisite, and you will normally only be advised to follow this path if you have taken and passed DAPR2 at the FIRST ATTEMPT.

- If you are considering a Psychology dissertation involving BASIC statistical methods, and plan to take moderately quantitative Honours Psychology courses, you must have taken at least DAPR1, and are recommended to have passed DAPR2.

- If you are considering a Language Sciences dissertation you must take at least one course in the 'Skills' group of LEL Honours courses in Year 3. The LEL Honours handbook provides full details on which courses belong to which category.

There are no compulsory courses in this year of this programme.

Language Sciences: all Honours courses (Year 3)

Notes:
Honours courses in Language Sciences (LEL) are grouped into the following categories: Foundation, Skills, Linguistics, and English Language. You also have the option of taking one or two Guided Research courses.

There are no restrictions on which categories you can select courses from. However, if you wish to complete a dissertation in Language Sciences, you must take at least one 'Skills' course in Year 3.

Full details on course categories are available in the LEL Honours Handbook. Be aware that some courses appear in more than one category, but you cannot take the same course twice.

You may take Guided Research A (Semester 1) and/or Guided Research B (Semester 2) as options in LEL. Both courses can be taken if you wish.

Psychology: all Year 3 options

-If you are considering a Psychology dissertation involving ADVANCED statistical methods and plan to take quantitatively demanding Honours Psychology courses, you must take Data Analysis for Psychology in R 3 (DAPR3). - A 40-credit dissertation in either Philosophy, Psychology, Language Sciences, or Informatics; OR a Philosophy coursework dissertation (2x 20 credits) (Group A)
- 80 credits of PPLS courses or Informatics courses, distributed as you wish (Group B)

You may divide your course credits as you wish, provided that across Years 3 and 4 combined, you take at least 20 credits of Honours courses in three of the four subject areas: Philosophy, Psychology, Language Sciences, Informatics. It is expected that you will choose courses in subject areas you studied in Years 2 and 3.

Advice on Selecting a Dissertation Course:

- In Philosophy, you may choose to complete either:
a) an independent dissertation (a single 8,000-word dissertation). You should select Philosophy Dissertation (PHIL10026) for this option.
b) a coursework dissertation (2x 5,000-word essays submitted in place of the standard assessment for two additional Year 4 Philosophy Honours courses). To take the coursework dissertation, you must select two courses from the
Philosophy Honours Year 4 Collection (listed in the block directly below this one).
These courses are attended as normal but will not count towards your optional credit total.

-To undertake either form of Philosophy dissertation, you must have completed
the Philosophy Dissertation Information course (0 credits) in Year 3.
- To complete a Psychology dissertation involving advanced statistical methods, you must have taken DAPR3 (Data Analysis for Psychology in R 3).
- To complete a Psychology dissertation involving basic statistical methods, you must have taken at least DAPR1, and it is recommended that you have passed DAPR2.
- To undertake a Language Sciences dissertation, you must have taken a course from the ¿Skills¿ group in Year 3.
