Summary | This course integrates theoretical concepts and practical applications to assist students in developing a coherent learning experience (e.g. workshop, course, module) for their learners. Designing teaching activities is often focused on delivery methods, with the designer's attention paid mainly to structuring the content and organising topics. Developing a learning experience, however, should go beyond and focus on creating a dynamic and engaging journey for learners, including crafting activities, assessments, and interactions that enable students to achieve the intended learning outcomes through deep understanding and skill acquisition. This course aims to provide the space for recognising and exploring the wider context in which this particular learning experience will be situated (including external stakeholders and regulatory bodies) and for creative educational design tailored to the needs and preferences of the learners. |
Course description |
During the course, you will be guided through subsequent steps of designing an educational intervention. Each of these steps will be rooted in essential pedagogical principles and informed by an evidence-based approach. The course is structured as a series of practical activities that you will undertake as part of the design process and documentation. Over the following weeks, you will analyse the impact of the wider context (such as external stakeholders and regulatory bodies) on your design. You will define learning goals and consider how to align learning activities and the process of assessment in a way which will promote effective learning. Finally, you will reflect upon the quality and evaluation of the designed intervention.
All those activities will form a key component of the assignment, along with a theoretical rationale and reflective account. Activities will also include dialogue with tutors and fellow students about design theories and considerations of the aims and context of those learning experiences.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Design a pedagogically sound educational intervention to include assessment strategies.
- Critique the educational intervention design, based on a holistic evaluation of aims, methods, resources, learning activities and assessment strategies
- Debate the significance of complexity, uncertainty, and learner autonomy when formulating educational aims and outcomes.
- Critically reflect on methods to evaluate the effectiveness of the educational intervention.
