SummaryThis is the second course in a consecutive series of courses designed to introduce the postgraduate student to the Masters of Science in primary dental care.
This course aims to cover the clinical topics of diagnosis and treatment planning. It will explore the common oral diseases and techniques for diagnosis.

Feedback Students receive informal feedback/ feed forward on a weekly basis from their on-line tutor.
Students receive formal feedback at the end of each semester based on assessed coursework and written assignments.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Develop a reproducible system for carrying out an oral health assessment, an assessment of dental anxiety, and an orthodontic treatment need assessment and recording it in the patient¿s record as a group project using the Wiki.
  2. Demonstrate an ability to elicit and record a full dental, medical and social history and to understand the implications for patient management and record this in a case report.
  3. Recognise and assess the common dental diseases which affect the teeth and supporting structures, using the most appropriate examination techniques and special investigations relevant to patient age and co-operation and demonstrate this in a clinical case report.
  4. Critically appraise the relevant clinical scientific literature supporting the current concepts of management of the common dental diseases and compare various behavioural management techniques on the tutor-led discussion board.
