SummaryThis course provides the grounding for focused exploration of the textiles discipline developing depth of understanding. There is a strong practical element in all activities. Students are supported in focusing relevant research and practical experimentation with techniques and materials to underpin appropriate responses to project briefs.

Textiles has a wide range of applications within Art and Design and as such requires textile designers to be both conversant with current and past practices, and to be adaptable to future technologies and materials development. This course is designed to reinforce learning from core courses Textiles 1A, What is Textiles, and 1B The role of textiles in Art & Design, and to extend skills through practical application in a range of projects. Through a series of 3 projects, this course challenges both groups and individuals to explore practical solutions to design challenges by applying technical and perceptual understanding of the textiles discipline in an increasingly diverse field.
Course description This course builds basic technical competences in the practice of textile design through a series of 3 projects aligned to a range of techniques and associated textile focused pre-occupations, for example screen printing, repeat mechanisms for textile design, colour trend predictions and embroidery. Students will have the opportunity to explore independent themes and personal directions within the framework of the design briefs.

The course encourages students to build and reflect on their technical understanding of the techniques and materials associated with the discipline. Introduction to key equipment and techniques will be embedded within projects, encouraging individuals to challenge methods and materials through personal practical exploration. Students will be supported in extending their technical competence in practical outcomes, which are aligned to current practice in the textiles industry.

The course will enable the students to:-
1. Investigate the competent use of an appropriate range of practical, material and theoretical methods associated with Textiles. This will be demonstrated through research files, sketchbooks and notebooks.
2. Develop, evaluate and record core theories and applications of the materials, techniques and methods
explored within the projects during the course, e.g. textile repeat mechanisms, colour trend analysis. This will be demonstrated through technical notebooks, sketchbooks, research files.
3. Working to project briefs apply knowledge, skills and understanding effectively in resolved outcomes. This will be demonstrated through the presentation of finished projects.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Co-requisites
Prohibited Combinations Other requirements If this course is core to your programme you will be automatically enrolled. For all other students, including Design students, the course is open on a first come first served basis until the course is full. Where a course depends on some technical proficiency, PTs are encouraged to help students check with the appropriate Course Organiser regarding suitability, e.g. if student has previous external practical experience. The course will be open to enrolments from Wednesday 11th September at 11.00 am. Please sign up for the course through your own School (they will advise if this is done via your PT, SSO or Teaching Office). We do not currently keep a waiting list.
Additional Costs Materials and equipment list will be supplied to students in advance of each project. Materials costs which will vary depending on the students individual method of production but could be approximated at £40 for this course.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding, and increasingly inquisitive and inventive approach to materials and technology associated with the discipline of textiles.
  2. Formulate appropriate responses to project briefs through a relevant range of approaches to research and ideas development aligned to the set textiles briefs.
  3. Use a variety of appropriate methods to realise your design ideas, communicating them in a clear professional manner, and reflecting on them for further future development.
