Exploring artists¿ attempts to break away from the High Modernism of the1950s, this challenging course provides an overview of the diverse set of practices (including land art, pop art and conceptual art) that would displace many long held assumptions about the nature of art and become characteristic of postmodernism.

By the end of the course students will:
Gain understanding of the complex ideas relating to postmodernism through the study of key texts and works of art
Situate the movement within the developments of art in the twentieth century
Become familiar with the theories and ideas behind conceptual art
Understand the wider cultural reach of postmodernism, beyond the art world
