SummaryModernism and the Cinema is designed to introduce students to the theories and practices of filmic modernism. The course will investigate the ways in which modernist filmmakers sought to overturn the realist and naturalistic style of Hollywood. Some of the major filmmakers to be discussed include Alain Resnais, Michelangelo Antonioni, Ingmar Bergman and Andrei Tarkovsky.
