| Summary | Academic English and Examination Skills is suitable for Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) levels A2-C1 (Pre-intermediate to Advanced). The course requires 10 hours of activity per week with 4 synchronous sessions (2 classes and 2 tutorials) and at least 6 hours of asynchronous activities. It is designed to improve both students' academic skills and their knowledge of academic grammar and vocabulary. The Examination Skills strand focuses on exam technique and common task types for the IELTS exam. |
| Course description |
AEES is aimed mainly at those who wish to improve their English language before starting a degree course in the UK. It would also be useful for students with a general background who wish to improve their English in a university setting.
Academic English and Examination Skills is composed of two principal elements.
In Academic English, all students work on functional language and skills related to study, using an EAP coursebook.
In Examination Skills, students analyse and practise different exam task types for the IELTS exam, with feedback from tutors.
Students are placed in groups according to initial IELTS level. There are 10 hours of activity (synchronous and asynchronous) per week, Monday to Friday.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- communicate more effectively and independently in a variety of contexts both orally and in writing
- produce various academic and exam-based written texts, develop an argument, describe or recount events and observe the conventions of the genre within which they are writing
- focus better on accuracy in grammar and lexis, particularly in terms of monitoring own language use and proof reading
- use appropriate learning and study skills to help improve independent learning strategies
