| Summary | This course embraces the analysis and imitation of a number of historical styles of composition, particularly 16th-century counterpoint, Baroque fugue and early Romantic song and string quartet writing.

| Course description |
While primarily concerned with learning technical skills, creativity in finding appropriate solutions will also be encouraged. Students will be asked to carry out compositional exercises in various styles, using the works of past composers as models. The course builds on and deepens the knowledge and skills imparted in Composition 1. Particular attention will be given to fugal writing and to the chromatic harmony used in the early nineteenth century.

Other requirements | You will use music theoretic knowledge of harmony and counterpoint to work closely with musical scores, reading and writing fluently in conventional staff notation from the very start of the course. Visiting students must consult the Course Organiser before enrolling. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Engage with a variety of musical styles through technical exercises and projects
- Have acquired the technical skills necessary to reproduce a number of past musical styles, particularly those of Palestrina, J.S. Bach, Schubert, Schumann and Mendelssohn.
- Have developed an understanding of the relationship between words and music in the compositions of Palestrina and of early Romantic song writers.
- Have analysed and understood the compositional processes involved in Baroque Fugues.
