Students will write a mock research grant proposal, after having researched the literature around a given topic and designed an experimental strategy for a doctoral-level research project.
Course description The course aims to teach students how to write a coherent research grant proposal in a style acceptable to a fund-awarding body.
The objectives are to:
explain the process of applying for research funding
guide the students through writing a grant application.
Train students to:
acquire information-gathering and synthesis skills;
write a coherent account of the question they are posing, including its importance and context
design the experimental strategy to solve the problem, and
discuss the research in the wider context of the value to society

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. describe the process of obtaining funding for academic research from the research councils;
  2. search, identify and critically evaluate the relevant literature to gain a thorough and current knowledge of a biochemistry-related topic;
  3. build on current knowledge of biologics to suggest new directions for investigation of a drug discovery problem;
  4. design the appropriate experiments to tackle the drug discovery problem;
  5. identify the resources required to execute the project; and prepare a relevant, coherent, and acceptable grant application.
