SummaryThis course is designed to cover the effects of livestock nutrition on immunity and disease burdens.
Course description This course is designed to cover the effects of livestock nutrition on immunity and disease burdens. Intake of dietary nutrients can contribute to regulating pathogens in the host, either directly or via the immune response and affecting host resistance. Intake of nutrients can also help regulate tolerance, by ameliorating the consequences of the disease. Investigate the use of natural anti-parasitics and trade offs e.g. antiparasitic versus anti-nutritional effects. The course will cover the role of specific dietary nutrients, such as protein and phytochemicals (e.g. tannins) on livestock health. Specific examples will be used to illustrate their consequences in disease dynamics. The course will focus on the interactions between nutrition and immunity in relation to gut pathogens, in monogastric and ruminant hosts. It will also offer discussion around the use of nutrition as a pathogen control strategy.
