SummaryThis course will focus on the diagnosis, management and treatment of equine gastroenterology cases. It will be structured as a five-week, lecture-based distance learning course with interactive elements, regular discussion and student feedback through engagement.
Course description This course will provide students with high-quality SCQF level 11 specialised skills in dealing with equine gastroenterology cases.

This five-week course is fully taught online through a mixture of recorded presentations, formative activities and asynchronous discussion. Live non-compulsory sessions may be scheduled depending on student group availability and time zones.

The course will focus on the following topics:

*Equine grass sickness update.
*Investigation and management of acute diarrhoea.
*Diagnosis and management of peritonitis.
*Evidence based approach to the "recurrent" colic case.
*Chronic diarrhoea - potential causes and appropriate diagnostic work-up.

As a guide, students will spend approximately 7 hours each week working through online material, including essential reading with up to 3 hours of online discussion and activity. A further 10 hours may be spent on additional self-study and assignments. It is very difficult to assess time spent in intellectual undertakings and the timings are only intended for guidance.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an ability to apply pathophysiological knowledge, epidemiological principles and evidence-based approaches (including selection of appropriate diagnostic procedures) to the evaluation and management of gastrointestinal problems in horses.
  2. Demonstrate an ability to apply therapeutic and surgical principles to the management of gastrointestinal in horses
  3. Provide practical advice on gastrointestinal problems including solutions applicable to field situations.
  4. Discuss the practical application of new techniques and therapies for equine gastrointestinal problems

The course reading list will be provided via the University¿s Resource List service. A maximum of three essential reading items will be given each week with further reading as required. A link to the list will be provided on EUCLID.
